Ketogenic diet works for epilepsy

Project summary

At least half of children with epilepsy and specific metabolic diseases can benefit from following a ketogenic diet. Dietitian Elles van der Louw of the Erasmus MC-Sophia Children’s Hospital has specialized in this treatment.
Although the diet has been proven to be a good alternative to medication in 50 to 70% of patients, physicians often prescribe medication rather than a change in diet. This is because too little research has been done on the ketogenic diet, thinks Van der Louw.
Next year Van der Louw hopes to obtain her PhD on this subject and wants to give her research more clarity about the possibilities and applications of the diet.
